The best part of all my years in the Business were the people I worked for, around and with.
I started in the elevator business as a junior draftsman for Haughton Elevator in the early ‘60s. I left the office and became a construction helper for the same company.
I was drafted in 1965 and served two years in the US Army.
As a helper, I worked many jobs in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and finally ended up in San Diego.
In San Diego I worked for Haughton, Montgomery, Westinghouse and back to Haughton in the early 70’s where I turned out as a mechanic and then became an adjuster.
I adjusted for Haughton in San Diego and Los Angeles. I left San Diego for Seattle to take a job as a Service Superintendent.
I left Haughton for US to take a job as the Repair and Construction Manager. I missed the field and went back to Haughton and did Mod work in the Pacific North West for several years until the company sent me to Sacramento for Schindler Haughton for more mod work. I had a falling out with Schindler Haughton and went to work for Keystone and then Reliable in LA and back to Sacramento.
I hit the bench for awhile until “The Elevator Gods Smiled upon Me” and was offered a job in Monterey as an LR for Tri County Elevator. I worked for Tri County for twelve years and retired in 2000. The last job with Tri County was the best job I ever had along with the best boss, “Harold”, I ever worked for.
After 40 years in the business and a member of Locals 8, 18 and 19, I am now happily retired in Monterey, California with my charming, beautiful wife, “Patti”, a Chihuahua named “Belle” and a strange looking cat known as “Spoochi”.
